What is Behind Positive Intention?

Our intention creates our reality. ~ Wayne Dyer

Think about this, and you will better understand why people still persist in choosing a certain action even if it is negatively affecting them along the process. In this video Jacky explains Positive Intention, and how this can be used to improve yourself or how you deal with others and their behavior.

Everything we do in life is triggered by the two P's - pleasure and pain. Jacky explains that for instance, coming to his sessions might mean that a person wants to improve their life, then that is searching for PLEASURE. Or it could be that some may be dealing with certain issues in their life and they want to overcome it, that is trying to overcome the PAIN.

Jacky even goes on to illustrate this point by using a smoker as an example. So why does a person continue to smoke even when he knows the health risks involved? You can see that this person's persistence hinge on a positive reaction despite the negative effects - and that is the pleasure of the habit. In this case, that person sees the pleasure to outweigh the pain.

In the principle of positive intention, resistance or objections emerge from an underlying positive intention or purpose. Onlookers may not necessarily see it the same way, but for that person, he sees a positive effect hence the resistance to change even if it is for the better. This principle comes from an assumption that people make the best choices as long as the possibilities and capabilities is accessible to them with how they perceive the world.

Reframing is the NLP process that is used in this particular case so that people can widen their perception of a situation while considering other options and recognizing the fact that they can make better choices.

So when you are dealing with any resistance to change you can use the principle of positive intention to assume that every behavior, including resistance and limiting beliefs, has a positive intention behind it. It is also important to separate the negative aspects of a certain behavior from the positive. You should also learn how to identify and respond to the positive intention behind the resistance of the person, and offer him other options or behavioral patterns to achieve the same positive intention.
